Poverty and Happiness

Singapore is a prosperous country however I don't think it is a happy country. According to the Happy Planet Index, Singapore's happy index is only 39.8 and ranks 90 out of the other countries.

I agree that rich do not affect how happy people will be a lot. This is proven by comparing China and Singapore's happy index and the GDP per capita. China's GDP per capita is $7599 while Singapore's GDP per capita is $57932. Despite of the huge difference in the GDP, China's happy index is still higher than Singapore, with a happy index of 44.7.

In my opinion different people have different expectations of themselves and thus, their happiness definition is not the same. Maybe most Singaporeans have a lot of stress due to the high cost of living and the pressure of work. So they are not happy even though their salaries is higher. Besides that, Singapore is a developed country and everyone is competing on this small land so how can one carry out leisure activities that he/she enjoys? On the other hand, people in the lesser developed countries will not worry that much, they are easily contented with things so that is why money don't affect happiness that much.

In my point of view, I think happiness can be getting a compliment from others or even as small as receiving a sweet. It all depends on our attitude towards life not the money.
